There are days when you just don’t want to train. Take today for instance. My wife, Cat and I generally train together, but differently, on Sunday afternoons. After a later than usual brunch, followed by some downtime, we really didn’t feel up for working out. Did I mention that we live in Mexico and it is the hot season with temperatures ranging in low 30’s C? That’s in the high 80’s for our American friends. Though my gym is reasonably cool, considering how hot it was outside, we were feeling kinda sluggish; we’re both in our mid-sixties and sometimes feel our age. So, we decided to try one of my motivational senior workouts: the bits & pieces workout.
So, we force ourselves into the gym, choose one relatively simple exercise and perform 6 to 12 repetitions of it. This leads to doing maybe another 1 or 2 sets of that exercise, which leads to a different exercise and so on. Before we know it, we will have performed 10 to 20 sets of exercises. Last week, Cat did 26 sets and I did just 25 to let her win. I started out with a simple external rotation exercise with a 10 lb dumbbell to rehabilitate my shoulders and went on from there. Once the blood gets pumping, you’re off to the races.
Yesterday, during the 5 pm heat of the day, I did 5 sets of 6 to 8 reps of pull-ups/ chin-ups followed by 5 sets of 15 reps of back extensions between sets. Today was low ring push ups, 5 sets of 8 reps, followed by 5 sets of 8 dips. The time just flies by. Then it was on to the cable machine for some different than usual work on my arms. A great set of guns is important for more than just aesthetics; you can push and pull heavier weight to become stronger. You don’t get strong by just thinking about it, and you don’t get “looking good’ dreaming about it. I won’t even bother telling you how many sets Cat did today, but far more than last week and that was with a nagging low back ache from some previous disc surgery.
So the moral of the story is get off your butt and just do it; anything, and it will lead to doing more of something. It’s all good. There will always be weather, be it hot or cold, rainy or dry and dusty. There are no reasonable excuses.
Please understand that we only go all out on our Sunday workouts, and all the exercises are constructive. Our week day training is a little more low key, but equally productive as senior workouts should be. Workouts lead by some maniac that will make you throw-up or pass out, will just tear your body down but the goal is to build the old body up. And yes, a reward of your
favourite cocktail (after hydrating with water of course) is justifiably earned.
